Club History

PEC Zwolle were founded in 1910, growing out of the rich sporting culture of Zwolle, a city that had long been a crossroads of trade and culture in the eastern Netherlands. The club spent decades working through the Dutch football pyramid, establishing themselves as a force in regional competition before eventually winning promotion to the top flight. Their first significant moment of national attention came in 1928 when they reached the KNVB Cup final, an extraordinary achievement for a club from outside the traditional powerhouses, though silverware eluded them on that occasion.

The postwar decades saw PEC Zwolle consolidate their position, yo-yoing between the top divisions as Dutch football professionalized and the Eredivisie era began in 1956. Their 22 seasons in the Eredivisie tell a story of a club perpetually battling to stay among the elite, experiencing the euphoria of promotion and the heartbreak of relegation in equal measure.

The modern era brought their greatest moments. Under the shrewd management of Ron Jans, PEC Zwolle assembled a compact, determined squad that confounded the pundits. In the 2013–14 season they reached the KNVB Cup final against Ajax at De Kuip in Rotterdam, and in one of the great upsets in recent Dutch cup history, they defeated the Amsterdam giants to claim the trophy – their first and only major honour. Captain Bram van Polen lifted the cup in scenes of extraordinary emotion, and the entire city of Zwolle erupted.

The following season, 2014–15, proved their finest in league terms as well, finishing sixth in the Eredivisie – their best-ever top-flight position – and returning to the KNVB Cup final, where they narrowly lost to FC Groningen. That two-year period represented a golden age that PEC Zwolle fans will speak of for generations. The club also earned European football as a result of their cup win, participating in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers and introducing the blue and white of Zwolle to a continental audience.

Great Players and Legends

PEC Zwolle's history is populated by players who gave everything for the blue and white, often becoming local legends despite never achieving fame at the very highest level. Bram van Polen stands as the totemic figure of the modern era – a commanding centre-back and inspirational captain who led the club through their greatest period and embodied the never-despairs mentality of the club's name. His commitment and consistency made him one of the most respected defenders outside the Dutch top four clubs.

In attack, Michiel Kramer brought physical presence and a poacher's instinct during the cup-winning years, contributing crucial goals on the road to that 2014 triumph. Ben Rienstra provided the creative heartbeat in midfield, his passing range and vision giving Zwolle the quality to compete with the Eredivisie's finest on their day.

Goalkeeper Diederik Boer was another hero of the golden era, making saves at critical moments during the cup run that kept Zwolle's dream alive. Midfielder Stef Peeters and the technically gifted Mustafa Saymak added flair and work-rate to a squad that was greater than the sum of its parts.

Manager Ron Jans deserves particular mention – his tactical acumen and man-management skills transformed PEC Zwolle from a side fighting relegation into genuine cup contenders and European participants. His legacy at the club is immense.

Iconic Shirts

The PEC Zwolle kit has always been rooted in blue and white, colours that reflect both civic pride and the club's honest, no-nonsense identity. Through the decades, the design language has shifted from simple cotton shirts with minimal detail to the more elaborate synthetic kits of the modern era, each carrying the unmistakable Zwolle identity.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Zwolle wore classic Dutch-style kits – clean blue with white trim, reflecting the era's aesthetic simplicity. These vintage pieces are extremely scarce and prized by serious collectors. The 1990s brought bolder designs with sponsor branding becoming more prominent, and the shirts of this period capture the unmistakable feel of that decade's football culture.

The kits from the 2013–15 golden era are the most coveted of all. The blue home shirt from the 2013–14 KNVB Cup-winning season carries extraordinary emotional weight – a retro PEC Zwolle shirt from that campaign is essentially a wearable piece of club history. The Europa League kits from the following season are also highly sought after by collectors who appreciate Zwolle's brief but memorable continental adventure.
